Why Alexandria works for a corporate event

How it works with us here

Alexandria is where a lot of Washington meetings actually happen: Old Town's hotels sit two Metro stops from Reagan National, across the river from the agencies and associations that fill them, on brick streets that feel far from downtown Washington. Most events we run here take place in an Old Town ballroom on the first or last afternoon of a meeting, or start in a hotel lobby and head down King Street on iPads. We bring the program, the facilitators and every piece of equipment.

More about corporate events in Alexandria, VA

King Street is the course

King Street runs about a mile and a half from the Metro to the Potomac, past Market Square and the rowhouses to the Torpedo Factory Art Center on the water. That walk carries a City SmartHunt®: small teams answer trivia at landmarks and shoot photos and videos on our iPads, and the scores come together at the finish. Software, engineering and professional services teams have started one from the Embassy Suites by the Metro, from The Alexandrian on King Street and from Morrison House a block off it.

Two days at the Westin

A retail company spent two days at The Westin Alexandria Old Town in Carlyle, a short walk from the King Street Metro. On the first, an Amazing Chase SmartHunt® sent teams through Old Town. On the second, Mini-Golf Build and Food Donation filled the ballroom: teams built putting holes out of canned and boxed food, played the course, and the food was donated afterward. A pharmaceutical group later booked the same build in the same hotel and sent its food to United Community.

Game shows and guitars

Best Corporate Feud has run at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town, across King Street from the Metro, and A Minute 2 Win It! has filled the Westin's ballroom for a consumer services company. A technology company chose Build-a-Guitar® at The Alexandrian, with teams assembling guitars from kits that went to young musicians once the program ended.

Giving back south of the city

Donations from Alexandria builds have gone to United Community, which serves families along the Route 1 corridor just south of the city. The bikes it received came from a technology team that ran Bike Build Donation® at the north Old Town hotel then called AKA Alexandria, now The Satire, Autograph Collection. We can point any build at a cause your company already supports in Northern Virginia.

Leadership sessions on the West End

Not every Alexandria event is in Old Town. A healthcare organization held Competition to Collaboration® twice in its own offices on the West End, two groups compete, then discover over 2.5 to 3 hours that pooling their methods beats guarding them. A conference room with space to move is all it needs.

Part of the Washington metro

Our Washington facilitators work Old Town as often as the District itself, along with Arlington next door and across the Wilson Bridge at National Harbor, and a group splitting a meeting between Old Town and the city books both with one planner.

Planning guide

Space for an Old Town program

Old Town's ballrooms are sized for association meetings, and the smaller hotels have meeting rooms for a team. The square footage below comes from each program's own spec.

Floor area per person

Measured another way

City SmartHunt®
A lobby on King Street or near the Metro to start and finish.
Amazing Chase SmartHunt®
The same Old Town streets, with a room for the icebreaker and the final scoreboard.

A SmartHunt moves along Old Town's sidewalks in small teams. An event set up in a city park is different: it goes through the city's special event permit, which Alexandria asks planners to file well ahead, so we plan outdoor pieces around the streets and the hotel.

A worked example

2,800 sq ft

80 people at 35 sq ft each

Each square is one person’s 35 sq ft.

Mini-Golf Build needs more floor than a game show because every team lays out a hole, so send the ballroom's dimensions with your headcount.

Planning guide

Alexandria weather through the year

On the Potomac, Old Town gets a sticky July near 90 degrees and a January that rarely stays below freezing for long.

  • Outdoors

    April and May

    • Warm enough for the waterfront by mid-April, and May is the favorite month for a SmartHunt down King Street.
  • Either way

    June to August

    • Hot and humid on the brick sidewalks. A SmartHunt that starts at 9 finishes before the worst of the heat.
  • Outdoors

    September and October

    • The heat breaks in mid-September and October is dry and mild: the second window for King Street.
  • Indoors

    November to March

    • Highs from the mid-40s to the upper 50s. Plan a ballroom program, and December is the month for holiday team building in Old Town.

Dates to plan around

George Washington Birthday Parade
February (February 14 in 2026). The parade closes King, Royal and Fairfax Streets for the afternoon.
Cherry blossom season
Late March to mid-April. Visitors fill hotels across the region, Old Town included.
Scottish Christmas Walk Parade
The first weekend of December. Bagpipes and clans march through Old Town, and the streets close along the route.

A SmartHunt on a parade day meets closed streets. Tell us your date and we will route around it or pick another afternoon.

Getting to Old Town

Few meeting towns are this easy to reach by rail: Metro, Amtrak and the commuter train all stop at the top of King Street.

Flying in

Reagan National, lines:BlueYellow
Two Metro stops south to the King Street station.
Dulles and BWI
Both are an hour or more by car at busy times; most groups fly into Reagan National when they can.

By rail

King Street Metro, lines:BlueYellow
The Metro station for the Westin, the Hilton and the Embassy Suites; The Satire is closer to Braddock Road.
Alexandria Union Station
Amtrak and VRE commuter trains, across the street from the Metro.

Around Old Town

King Street Trolley
Free, every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., between the Metro and the waterfront.
Parking
Old Town's streets are metered and tight, so send drivers to the hotel garage or a public garage near your venue.

Corporate events and team building in Alexandria, VA: questions we get

Which Alexandria hotels have you worked in?

The Westin Alexandria Old Town, The Alexandrian, the Hilton Alexandria Old Town, the Embassy Suites by Hilton Alexandria Old Town, The Satire (formerly AKA Alexandria) and Morrison House. All are in Old Town or Carlyle, each close to a Metro station, so a program can start in the ballroom and spill out onto King Street.

Can we do a scavenger hunt in Old Town Alexandria?

Yes, and it is the program Alexandria groups book most. A City SmartHunt® runs from your hotel down King Street toward the waterfront, and teams of eight to ten are back at the start within two and a half hours. The free King Street Trolley helps anyone who would rather ride part of the way.

What do Alexandria groups book besides SmartHunts?

Mini-Golf Build and Food Donation and Competition to Collaboration® come next, followed by Best Corporate Feud, A Minute 2 Win It!, Build-a-Guitar® and Bike Build Donation®. The game shows suit a ballroom after a day of sessions, and the builds end with a donation.

Where do the donations go?

Builds in Alexandria have supported United Community, which works with families along the Route 1 corridor south of the city. We can also send the bikes, guitars or food to an organization your company already works with in Northern Virginia or the District.

Should we plan this with your Washington, DC team?

It is one team. Groups often stay in Old Town and spend a day in the District, so one planner can put a SmartHunt on King Street and a game show downtown in the same week. This page covers Old Town, Carlyle and the West End.

Is there a group size that works best here?

Old Town handles a leadership team in a conference room or a company that fills the Westin's ballroom. Program pages list 30 to 1,000+, and a big SmartHunt staggers its teams along King Street so no corner gets crowded.

Which months suit a walk through Old Town?

Mid-April through May, and mid-September through October. July and August are humid, so we start a summer SmartHunt early, and in the cold months the ballroom programs take over.

What lead time do Old Town dates need?

Two months is a safe start for a hotel ballroom, and longer for cherry blossom weeks or December. A leadership session in your own West End office can come together in about a month.
