    Crews win bike components in short rounds, assemble the bikes and hand them over to kids from a local youth group. Our largest Los Angeles build put 750 people from a financial services firm on the floor of the Pasadena Convention Center in October 2019.

    Teams head out with iPads, chase clues around the neighborhood and post photo and video answers to a live leaderboard. A travel company sent 780 people out from the Westin Bonaventure downtown in May 2015, and a media group of 116 began at the Television Academy plaza in North Hollywood in 2022.

  3. 3. Bridge to the Future

    Each team decorates one section with its own picture of where the company is headed, then the sections join into a bridge strong enough to hold the whole group. A banking group of 430 built one at the Westin Bonaventure, and a meeting of 244 built theirs at the Fairmont Century Plaza in September 2015.

  4. 4. Go-Kart Competition

    Each crew designs a self-powered kart, builds it from a kit and races it down a course laid out in the room. An electronics company of 121 raced at the Beverly Hilton in January 2017.

  5. 5. Competition to Collaboration

    Two halves of the room work separately on a set of challenges, then find out the score only climbs when they share what worked. A retail group of 104 ran it at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in June 2019, and a group of 50 ran it at Cal State LA in August 2024.

  6. 6. A Minute 2 Win It!

    Sixty-second tabletop games with cups, cards and pencils, scored round by round until one team takes the title. A consulting firm of 135 played at the Westin Pasadena in February 2026, and a construction materials group of 55 played at the LAX Marriott.

  7. 7. Operation Military Care

    Puzzles and trivia earn the contents of care packages, which teams fill and decorate for service members. A construction materials group of 90 packed them at the Embassy Suites LAX North in November 2021, and a technology firm of 120 did it outdoors at Caltech's Tournament Park.

  8. 8. Food Truck Face-Off

    Teams invent a food truck brand, build and decorate a cardboard truck, cook a signature dish and pitch it to the judges. A banking group of 180 went head to head at the Westin Bonaventure in September 2019.

    Crews build a raft from a kit, find its weak spots in a test launch, then race it against the other boats. An agriculture company of 58 put theirs in the water at the Marina del Rey Marriott in September 2019.

    Challenges on iPads earn classroom, art room and nurse's office supplies, which teams pack into bags for a local school. A university group of 115 packed them at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center in April 2017.

    Music and memory games earn MP3 players and other items that go to nursing home residents living with dementia. A banking group of 65 played it at the Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in January 2019.

    Relays and field events scored team against team, best on a lawn or open field. A technology firm of 150 competed on the grass at Caltech's Tournament Park in Pasadena in July 2015.

Getting there

Most out-of-town guests land at LAX. Metro's C Line and K Line stop at the LAX/Metro Transit Center, and a free shuttle runs from bus bays 1 and 2 there to every terminal. The FlyAway bus goes nonstop between the terminals and two stops, Union Station downtown and Van Nuys. A regular Metro fare is $1.75, with free transfers for two hours.

Picking the right size of room

Build activities like Bike Build Donation and Go-Kart Competition take the most floor, with tables for parts and a lane to ride or race, so ask the hotel for a ballroom section with wide aisles. Card and cup games such as A Minute 2 Win It! fit a standard meeting room. Team Olympics wants grass, and Build-a-Raft wants a pool or a sheltered marina.

Our biggest Los Angeles events were a City SmartHunt for 780 from the Westin Bonaventure and a Bike Build Donation for 750 at the Pasadena Convention Center. Smaller teams of 20 or 30 work just as well in a hotel meeting room.

Is there an outdoor option?

City SmartHunt sends teams out on foot with iPads, and downtown around the Bonaventure works well for it. Team Olympics and outdoor packing activities have run on the field at Caltech's Tournament Park in Pasadena.
