What Clients Say About Crack the Case!®

The Crack the Case event went very well. The team enjoyed it very much and especially loved Paul’s ice breaker activity that wasn’t part of our original request, and he and Brian were able to pivot at the last minute to accommodate changes to our group size. Adding the competitive ice breaker really helped to get the team excited and they still talk about it today. They definitely exceeded expectations. Awesome job! Thank you!

Best Corporate Events put on a great teambuilding event for our first annual department onsite gathering. We chose “Crack the Case” for our event which was a lot of fun, quite challenging, and which did encourage our group members to collaborate to solve the later puzzles. Our facilitator did an excellent job of facilitating our event and I would give him five stars. I would definitely consider Best Corporate Events for our future department teambuilding events.

FAQs about Mystery-Themed Team Building Games

What skills does a mystery-solving corporate team building activity actually develop?

A mystery-solving corporate team building activity develops a surprisingly broad range of professional skills — all in the context of a fun, low-stakes challenge. When your group works together to crack a case, they're practicing many of the same competencies that drive everyday workplace performance:
  • Critical thinking — decoding clues, recognizing patterns, and evaluating information under time pressure.
  • Communication — sharing findings clearly and efficiently so nothing gets missed.
  • Cross-functional collaboration — working with people outside your immediate circle to piece together the bigger picture.
  • Adaptability — pivoting when a theory doesn't pan out and trying a different approach.
  • Collective problem-solving — integrating different perspectives to reach a solution no single person could arrive at alone.
These aren't just game mechanics — they're the same dynamics that show up in project work, client challenges, and high-pressure deadlines. A detective-style activity makes these skills visible and reinforces them in a way that's memorable long after the event ends.

How does cross-team collaboration work in a mystery or detective-style team building event?

Cross-team collaboration is one of the most distinctive features of a well-designed detective-style team building event — and it's worth understanding how it works before you plan your event. In a mystery-solving format, your group is typically divided into smaller teams, each working on their own set of clues, puzzles, or encoded messages. The key is that no single team has everything they need to solve the final case. At a certain point, teams must share information, compare findings, and combine insights across groups to unlock the final stage. This structure mirrors how complex work actually gets done in organizations — not in isolated silos, but through deliberate information sharing across departments or teams. The result is:
  • Organic cross-departmental interaction that doesn't feel forced
  • Shared ownership of the final outcome
  • Increased awareness of how others think and approach problems
If one of your goals is breaking down silos or improving inter-departmental communication, a mystery-themed event is particularly well-suited to reinforce those behaviors through experience instead of instruction.

What types of corporate groups or occasions are mystery-solving team building activities best suited for?

Mystery-solving team building activities are remarkably versatile — but they tend to work especially well in specific contexts. Use this practical framework to determine if a mystery team building activity is right for your event: Best-fit scenarios include:
  • Onboarding or new team formation — puzzles give new colleagues a structured way to interact and learn how each other thinks.
  • Offsites and annual gatherings — the immersive format makes a strong impression as a centerpiece activity.
  • High-achieving or analytical teams — groups in tech, finance, consulting, or law tend to be especially energized by logic-based challenges.
  • Cross-departmental events — the built-in collaboration mechanic naturally bridges teams that don't typically work together.
Group size considerations: The format of Crack the Case scales well for groups ranging from roughly 30 to over 1,000 participants, since the group is broken down into smaller teams throughout the activity. If your group thrives on challenge, values problem-solving, and would respond well to a bit of friendly competition, a mystery-solving format is a strong choice. Reach out to discuss how this experience can be tailored to your specific team and goals.
