12 team building activities in Detroit, MI

Ten come straight from groups we have hosted downtown and in the suburbs, shown with the venue and headcount, and two are catalog activities that fit the city well.

  1. 1. Bike Build Donation at the RenCen

Teams win parts in short challenges, put the bikes together, then hand them to Detroit kids before the session ends. The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center has hosted it for 300 people in March 2015 and for a retail team of 70 in October 2024.

  2. 2. A Minute 2 Win It! at the Book Cadillac

Rapid sixty-second games with cups, balloons and pencils, with our host calling scores. A financial services group of 115 played it at the Westin Book Cadillac on Washington Boulevard in September 2024.

    See the activity

  3. 3. Literacy for Little Ones

Teams earn books and reading supplies through challenges, then pack them for children from infancy to age 5. A financial services group of 210 ran it at MGM Grand Detroit in September 2025.

    See the activity

  4. 4. Bridge to the Future

Every team builds one cardboard and duct tape span marked with its goals, then the spans are joined into a bridge strong enough for the whole group to cross. A group of 145 built one at the Westin Book Cadillac in March 2019.

  5. 5. Speed Networking in Southfield

Timed rounds with conversation prompts pair people who rarely work together, which suits a merger or a new leadership team. A financial services team of 100 ran it at the Westin Southfield in Town Center in July 2025.

  6. 6. Build-A-Guitar

Teams earn parts, assemble acoustic guitars and tune them, then the guitars go to teens through schools and youth programs. A real estate group of 100 built them at the Westin Southfield in April 2019.

    See the activity

  7. 7. Trivia Blast Live! at the Dearborn Inn

A host, answer pads and a live leaderboard turn trivia into a produced game show. A media group of 180 played it at the Dearborn Inn, the hotel Henry Ford opened in 1931 next to his airfield, in June 2016.

    See the activity

  8. 8. Helping the Homeless

Teams earn clothing, hygiene items and food through games, then pack care bags for people experiencing homelessness. An automotive team of 36 packed them at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth in December 2025.

    See the activity

  9. 9. Best Corporate Feud

Survey rounds with buzzers and a scoreboard, hosted like the TV show and played by colleagues. A manufacturing team of 30 played it at Saint John's Resort in December 2018.

    See the activity

  10. 10. Wagon Build Donation in your office

Teams build full-size red wagons and load each with a stuffed animal and a book for a preschooler. A financial services firm ran it in its own Southfield office for 51 people in March 2026 and for 86 in July 2026, so no hotel booking was needed.

    See the activity

  11. 11. City SmartHunt downtown

Teams solve clues and take photo challenges on iPads as they race between stops. A downtown route can take in Campus Martius Park and the Detroit Riverwalk, with the free QLINE on Woodward for longer hops.

    See the activity

  12. 12. Earth, Wind and Solar

Teams earn parts through trivia, build solar-powered rovers and race them, then pack science kits for kids. It speaks to the engineers and product teams of the auto industry, and it fits in a standard hotel meeting room.

Planning team building in Detroit

How it works with us here

In the city, groups usually meet at the Westin Book Cadillac, MGM Grand Detroit or the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, and our largest Detroit session filled Huntington Place on the river. Plenty of teams stay in the suburbs instead, at hotels in Southfield, Plymouth and Dearborn. Financial services, automotive and manufacturing companies book with us most here, and charity builds lead the requests.

More about corporate events in Detroit, MI

Getting there

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) serves the region. The Detroit Air Xpress (DAX) bus and SMART's FAST Michigan route 261 both leave from the Evans and McNamara terminals for downtown. Once there, the QLINE streetcar runs free along 3.3 miles of Woodward Avenue, and the free People Mover loop stops at the Renaissance Center and at Huntington Place.

Picking the right size of room

Charity builds need about 25 square feet a person, and Bridge to the Future closer to 40, so a group over 100 belongs in a hotel ballroom downtown or in Southfield. A company-wide meeting can take the 40,000-square-foot Grand Riverview Ballroom at Huntington Place. Under 50 people, a meeting room or your own office handles a packing build or A Minute 2 Win It!.

Team building in Detroit, MI: questions we get

What are the best team building activities in Detroit?

Detroit teams book charity builds most, with the Bike Build Donation and Literacy for Little Ones at the top. For an hour of fun inside a conference, A Minute 2 Win It! or Trivia Blast Live! needs nothing more than a ballroom and a screen.

Where in Detroit have you run activities?

In the city, the Westin Book Cadillac, MGM Grand Detroit, the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center and Huntington Place. Out in the suburbs, the Westin Southfield, Saint John's Resort in Plymouth and the Dearborn Inn.

Is there an outdoor option in Detroit?

Yes. A City SmartHunt runs on foot around Campus Martius Park and the Riverwalk, and we plan those from May through October. Winter groups stay inside with a build or a game show.

How big a group can you handle?

Detroit-area groups have ranged from 30 people to 1,500. The biggest was a custom LEGO race for 1,500 at Huntington Place, and the charity builds scale well past a few hundred.

How long should we set aside?

Most activities take 1.5 to 2 hours with the briefing and wrap-up. Build-A-Guitar and Bridge to the Future need 2 to 2.5 hours.

Do you also work in Southfield, Novi and Plymouth?

Yes, and many of our Detroit-area sessions happen there. Each of those cities has its own page with the venues we use.

Can people joining by video take part?

Yes. Our host can run Best Corporate Feud as a hybrid game, so a Detroit ballroom and colleagues dialing in from other offices compete on one scoreboard. A fully remote team can play one of our virtual activities on Zoom or Teams.

When should we book?

Give us six to eight weeks for most dates. September through December is the busiest stretch for Detroit groups, so book fall dates by midsummer.
