Month: May 2018

As the last weekend of May approaches, we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day which is observed on the last Monday in May. Memorial Day was created in honor to remember those who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. It marks the start of summer and the kickoff to many outdoor activities for families and friends to enjoy together.

On Memorial Day weekend, cities across the country pause to remember those whose lives were lost, estimated to be up over 6 million people. This number is an accumulation resulting from the numerous battles dating back to the Civil War.

Although a somber memory, Memorial Day weekend is notorious for positive high points which have become great traditions over the years with events throughout the weekend. Here are just a few of the well-known activities that go on during Memorial Day weekend. Which of these weekend traditions do you look forward to the most?

1. Store Sales – Memorial Day weekend has become a staple weekend for many retailers to host one of their largest sales of the year.  If you have experienced a Labor Day or Black Friday sale, you most likely have been on the hunt for some of the greatest Memorial Day sales at your local retailers. Typically, the discounts tend to be a great saving on big-ticket items like mattresses and home appliances, but there are plenty of other opportunities to save on things you need and want around the home like clothing, electronics and beauty supplies.

2. Backyard BBQs –  Hamburgers, hot dogs and all things patriotic are traditionally served on Memorial Day during BBQs with families and friends. Being a federal holiday, a majority of companies are closed and give their team the day off from work. This allows people an extra day to spend poolside, soaking up the sun’s rays and cooking up some delicious favorites on the BBQ.  You may notice the party decoration theme is that of red, white and blue, the colors of our nation’s flag. Many BBQ goers enjoy cooking up a festive dessert or appetizer platter that boasts the red, white and blue colors.

3. Neighborhood Ceremonies and Parades – National Cemetery Administration host Memorial Day ceremonies at VA national cemeteries and local communities host parades across the country. Generally, a Veteran will be a guest speaker at the ceremony and speak to those being honored as well as veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Also, recognized are the surviving veterans’ families, prisoners of war and those missing in action.

The question is mint julep or margarita this Saturday?

This year, Saturday, May 5th is the day of two significant reasons to celebrate, but which will you participate? At Best Corporate Events, our team will be celebrating #DerbyDay with fun activities all day. The Kentucky Derby marks its 144th year with what is known as the greatest two minutes in sports! The Kentucky Derby is held on a dirt track at famous Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. 20 horses will compete for a chance to win the $2 million purse. The derby is the first race within the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing followed by the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, Maryland and the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York. For the same horse to win all three races is called the Triple Crown and considered the most significant accomplishment in thoroughbred racing. 2015 was the last year a horse named, American Pharoah accomplished this achievement.

So what do you need for a fun and successful derby day with your group of friends or teammates? We’ve outlined all the essentials here.

1. The Hat – Ladies must select the most extravagant hat possible that represents their personalities. The derby is not just about the horses. It’s about making a statement in the fashion world with your derby hat and attire. Derby hats come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Whether decorated with feathers, jewels or bows, the hat must be that perfect statement piece to go with your race day dress. More dramatic the better!

2. The bourbon – The Kentucky Derby and bourbon go together hand and hand. The signature drink of the derby is the mint julep. The mint julep consists of mint leaf, bourbon, simple syrup, and ice. Kentucky Derby goers have been sipping on mint juleps since 1938. Each year almost 120,000 juleps are served throughout the event at Churchill Downs.

3. The wager – If you’re a betting man than the Kentucky Derby is one of your favorite days of the year. Spectators will start reviewing the field days before and strategizing how they will play their bets. A lot goes into formulating the perfect bet. It takes an entire team of people behind the scenes including the jockey, the trainers, the owners and many others to develop a winning horse.

4. The lyrics – If you are familiar with the 7th inning stretch, then you may know the infamous “My Old Kentucky Home” song sang each year at the Kentucky Derby. This song which was originally composed back in 1852 became the official state song in 1928 when the state legislature selected and adopted the song. The song is now sung every year at the Kentucky Derby as the kick off to the event.

5. The hot brown – An open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and Mornay sauce was born in the 1920’s and is now a Louisville tradition. Cities across America have adapted their own versions in the spirit of the derby, and hot browns are now served at restaurants and derby parties throughout the day.

Team building can be fun and entertaining and can revolve around events and “holidays” on the calendar. This weekend will be a double dose of fun whether you are choosing to watch the big race or snack on some Mexican inspired dishes. At Best we offer the flavors of Mexico year round with our culinary team building event called Fiesta Fun! Learn more here.

      What is a Keynote Speaker?

Keynote Speaker is an often-misunderstood term associated with simply a motivational speaker, breakout speaker, industry expert, etc. Most professional speakers are not actual trained Keynote Speakers, who are specialists, therefore in much lower supply, and in higher demand.

Keynote Speakers are experienced, professional communicators who engage an audience, capturing the essence of a client’s meeting. They are able to highlight it to their audience while simultaneously delivering their own key concepts and proprietary content in an entertaining and impactful way. Most companies understand that this specialization is very much worth the time (around an hour) and the investment.

In order to capture the perfect essence, a Keynote Speaker spends the necessary time researching a client’s industry, their issues, and their audience to craft a customized presentation into a unique and distinctive moment specifically for the client’s event.

As a top Keynote Speaker, Tom Leu strategically uses compelling storytelling, humor, powerful visuals, audio and video clips, and audience participation elements to weave an impactful message into your event in a fun and memorable way. Tom can also pair his Keynote with Best Corporate Events programming, laying a foundation and setting a tone that best prepares participants for maximum engagement in the forthcoming team events that day.
