Wishing You a Happy New Year

Happy New Year From Our Team To Yours

As the year comes to close, it’s time to determine how you will want to ring in the New Year on December 31st. Which of the New Year traditions will you participate in?

Whether you are at home, at a party or in Time Square with 2 million of your closest friends, chances are you will be counting down till midnight watching the classic New York City ball drop. It is said that 22 percent of Americans will fall asleep before midnight.

In case you are one of the 78 percent still awake, here are just some of the known traditions you may be able to participate in:

At midnight, you may sing the traditional song “Auld Lang Syne.” Meaning “old long ago” by Scottish poet Robert Burns. The majority of people probably do not all the words. But you could always hum along loudly enough to get by.

You may or may not kiss someone at midnight. Kissing someone at midnight is said to bring good luck. According to English and German folklore, the first person you encounter in a New Year — and the nature of this encounter — sets the tone for the rest of the year. A kiss is about strengthening ties you wish to maintain in the future.

You may eat black-eyed peas. A tradition in the south, it was believed that the black-eyed peas symbolized coins and eating them insured economic prosperity for the coming year, wrote Frederick Douglass Opie, a food historian, in his blog Food As A Lens.

You may watch fireworks. China invented fireworks and is also one of the first countries to take part in the New Year’s celebrations due to their time zone. It’s believed that the noise of the fireworks scares evil spirits and misfortune.

Do you have a New Year’s Resolution?

You may make a New Years resolution. Making resolutions are goals to improve one’s life. Common resolutions include diet, exercise, quitting bad habits, and other issues concerning personal wellness. A prevailing view is that the first day of the year is a clean slate to start over.

You may attend a New Year’s Eve or a New Year’s day parade. For instance, the New Year’s Day Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

You may watch a lot of football. Watching football is a familiar activity on New Year’s Day in America, for example, the Rose Bowl.

You may toast champagne, throw confetti and shake those noisemakers to express your gratefulness for the past year’s blessings. All these traditions are said to wish luck to the future.

Many nations and cultures have their own characteristic way of celebrating.

However you wish to celebrate, we wish you much health, success, and happiness in 2018!

National Chocolate Day!

Sweets, sweets, oh how we love you!

Don’t take our word for it, according to the Huffington Post, Americans eat 100 pounds of chocolate every second. That’s a lot of love!

This is why we couldn’t ignore our sweetest team building program Best has to offer, Chocolate Architect!

During this program, groups come together to build various themed structures, utilizing candies and sweet delicacies. Once structures are complete, final touches are added in the form of various colorful confectionaries. When their vision becomes reality, each team’s creative interpretation will be displayed for the entire group to enjoy.

You will find it rather hard not to bond over building design and decor intricacies!

First Day of Winter Starts Now

Winter is upon us

Today marks the official first day of winter, also known as the winter solstice. On December 21st each year, the points on the horizon where the sun rises and sets advance southward each day; the high point in the Sun’s daily path across the sky, which occurs at local noon, also moves southward each day. So for us non-scientist, what does this mean?

The Sun’s path has reached its southernmost position. The days are the shortest of the year and temperatures are at their lowest.

“As the Earth moves around the sun, each hemisphere experiences winter when it is tilted away from the sun and summer when it is tilted toward the sun,” CNN senior meteorologist Dave Hennen said. “Scientists are not entirely sure how this occurred, but they think that billions of years ago, as the solar system was taking shape, the earth was subject to violent collisions that caused the axis to tilt.”

Thanks to the Earth’s tilt, we experience the four seasons. Except of course in the south. On a “winter” day in January in Florida; temperatures can average as high as 76 while in the northern states they experience below freezing temperatures. This is the time of year the Best Corporate Events staff appreciates that our corporate office is in Florida although we are executing team building events across the country year round.

The solstice occurs at the same moment everywhere on Earth, but it is observed at 24 different times of day because of the world’s 24 time zones, according to National Geographic.
The Apollo 8 spacecraft launched on December 21, 1968, becoming the first manned moon mission.
Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth on December 21, 1620.
The word solstice derived from the Latin sol, meaning “sun” and sister meaning “to make a standstill”.

That Ugly Sweater Is In Fashion

Why do we want to wear an ugly sweater?

For some reasons we may never understand, the month of December influences people to bring out their most fabulous ugly sweater. It has become so popular that the third Friday of December has been named “National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day” and this Friday, December 15th, people all over the U.S. will celebrate.

So why do we want to wear something so hilariously hideous and how did it start? Maybe it was in the 80’s with shows like The Cosby Show and characters in movies like Chevy Chase in National Lampoon Christmas Vacation that lead the way for this trend to take off.

Have no fear – from red and green pom-poms to silly designs; these ugly holiday sweaters are pretty easy to find. So next time you receive a holiday party invitation from your company or friends that states “Ugly Christmas Sweater Party,” don’t be afraid to wear the tackiest and gaudiest sweater you can find, the uglier, the better. People in the U.S. can’t wait to stay up to date with the latest fashion trend, even if it’s a bad one!

Want to make it even uglier, consider some of these tips:

Add more color, embellishments, glitter or tinsel
Light it up – add some flashing lights!
Give it some 80’s flair with reindeer, cats, and other animals
Add pins, bows, garland and funny holiday decor from around the house

Don’t be shy. Get into the holiday spirit and enjoy spending time with family, friends, and coworkers wearing your ugliest Christmas sweater. You will have fun and definitely be entertaining. Don’t forget to share it on social media! #NationalUglyChristmasSweaterDay
